Katerina Schina

Born in Athens in 1956, she studied law at the University of Athens and music (advanced theory, piano) at the National Conservatory under Alexandros Ainian. Her career as a critic began with articles in 1983 for the newspaper "I Avgi." She was a member (1985-1988) of the editorial team of the magazine "To Tetarto," a music critic and columnist for the newspaper "I Kathimerini" (1987-1999), and from 1995 to 1999, she was responsible for the Sunday supplement "Ideas-Culture" in the same newspaper. She was part of the editorial team for the special book supplement "Bibliothiki" of the newspaper "Eleftherotypia" (1999-2009) and, since 2009, has been a collaborator with "I Kathimerini" on book-related topics, as well as an editorial consultant and critic for the monthly cultural magazine "The Books' Journal." She worked as a music producer for the Third and Second Program of the State Radio (1983-1994) and on Channel 15 of Roussos Koundouros (1987-1989) and collaborated on the television book program "Vivliorama" (ERT) (1987-1990). From 2006 to 2011, she was the editor-in-chief and co-host, alongside Vangelis Chatzivasileiou, of the television show "Books in the Box" (ET1). She taught cultural reporting at the Department of Media Studies at Panteion University (1994-2004) and from 2002 to 2010, she taught literary translation at the European Translation Center (EKEMEL). She has collaborated with the ERT Orchestra, the Greek National Opera, the Athens Concert Hall, and the Athens Festival, writing texts for performance programs and translating librettos of lyrical works. She has translated into Greek works by Edgar Allan Poe, Toni Morrison, Philip Roth, George Steiner, Roland Barthes, Witold Gombrowicz, Ian McEwan, Emma Goldman, Mark Twain, William Hazlitt, Jack London, Willa S. Cather, Roddy Doyle, Malcolm Bradbury, Helene Hanff, Ben Schott, among others, as well as poems by Byron, Shelley, Wordsworth, Wallace Stevens, Hilda Doolittle, Anne Sexton, and others. She authored the book "Operas of the World," published by the Society for the Creation of a New Building for the Greek National Opera, and the album "The Greece of Toil," published by the Rizarios Foundation. In 1997, she was awarded by the Hellenic Society of Literary Translators for her translation of Toni Morrison's novel "The Bluest Eye," and in 2008 by the "Gourmet" magazine of Eleftherotypia for her translation of Ben Schott's "Schott's Food and Drink Miscellany" (2006). Her book "Good and Reverse: The Culture of Knitting" (published by Kichli) was honored in 2015 with the State Essay Award.
