
CHaris Vlavianos
Haris Vlavianos was born in Rome in 1957. He studied philosophy at the University of Bristol and political theory at the University of Oxford. His doctoral dissertation, titled "Greece 1941-1949: From Resistance to Civil War," was published by Macmillan in 1992. He has published eleven poetry books, with the most recent being the bilingual, collector's edition "The Surface of Things" (2006) and the collections "Holidays in Reality" (2009), "Sonnets of Misfortune" (2011), and "The History of Western Philosophy in 100 Haikus" (2011). His essays include "The Other Place" (1994), "Who Cares About Poetry?" (2007), and "The Double Dream of Writing" (with Christos Chryssopoulos, 2010), as well as the humorous anthology "Britannica" (2004). He has also translated works by prominent poets such as Walt Whitman ("Selected Poems," 1986), Ezra Pound ("Hugh Selwyn Mauberley," 1987, "Drafts and Fragments of Cantos CX-CXX," 1991), T.S. He directed the magazine "Poetry" for 15 years and currently directs the new magazine "Poetics" (issue 1, 2008). He teaches History and Political Theory at the American College of Greece (Deree) and creative poetry writing in the seminar series of Patakis Publishers, and has previously taught the same subject at the National Book Centre.
