Jayne Anne Phillips was born and raised in West Virginia. She has taught at Harvard University and Boston University. As a writer, she gained recognition with her first book, the short story collection "Black Tickets" (1979), which was awarded by the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Works by Jayne Anne Phillips have been translated into twelve languages.
