Giannis Kiourtsakis was born in 1941 in Athens and studied law in Paris. Following a series of studies on Seferis, Karagiozis, oral tradition, and folk culture, he worked on a novelistic and essay trilogy titled "The Same and the Other" from 1995 to 2007, using himself as the experimental subject. In 1986, he was awarded the Second State Prize for Essay, and in 1996, he received the Novel Award from the magazine "Diavazo."
