André Breton

André Breton was born in 1896 in Tinchebray (Orne) and passed away in 1966 in Paris. He studied at the Medical School. In 1919, he founded the magazine "Littérature" with Soupault and Aragon. The magazine's group initiated Dadaist activities. In 1922, he broke away from the movement and in 1924 published the "Manifesto of Surrealism." A poet and essayist, he was the foremost theorist of surrealism, and his work influenced the re-examination of themes in modern art, literature, and aesthetics.
