Tennessee Williams

Thomas Lanier, known by his pen name Tennessee Williams, was born in 1911 in Columbus, Mississippi. He studied in Missouri, St. Louis, and Iowa. During his student years, he wrote his first play, "Cairo! Shanghai! Bombay!" This was followed by "American Blues," "The Long Goodbye," "Battle of Angels," and the landmark play "The Glass Menagerie," which was performed in Chicago and New York to great acclaim, earning the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award. As a recognized author, Williams continued to write prolifically, achieving success after success. From 1947 to 1961, he penned works that became major hits and continue to resonate with audiences today: "Summer and Smoke," "A Streetcar Named Desire," "The Rose Tattoo," "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof," "Orpheus Descending," "Suddenly, Last Summer," "Sweet Bird of Youth," and "The Night of the Iguana." The American author's works are characterized by pessimism, often focusing on the failure and eventual downfall of the protagonists. However, after 1962, things became challenging for the famous writer. His later works failed to achieve success, leading him to turn to alcohol and drugs. He died in 1983, alone in a hotel room in New York City. Other works include "The Glass Menagerie," "Period of Adjustment," "The Milk Train Doesn't Stop Here Anymore," as well as novels like "The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone," "Moise and the World of Reason," and "Memoirs," among others. Many of his works have been adapted into films, and he was honored four times with the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award and twice with the Pulitzer Prize. In Greece, Tennessee Williams' work is particularly beloved, with many of his plays being staged on Greek stages.
