Zbigniew Herbert

The Polish poet Zbigniew Herbert (1924-1998) was born in Lviv, which today is part of Ukraine. As a teenager, he participated in the resistance against Nazism. He studied law, economics, and philosophy at the Universities of Warsaw and Krakow. Herbert wrote both plays and poetry. He is considered the most classical among Polish poets. His poetry, innovative in form yet restrained, speaks with precision and honesty, becoming the voice of reason amidst the chaos surrounding him.
