Panagiota Asimakopoulou - Atzaka
Panagiota Asimakopoulou-Atzaka was born in Zagora, Pelion. She studied Archaeology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, where she later worked until her recent retirement. She is now an emeritus professor in the Department of History and Archaeology. Her interests primarily focus on the research of Late Antiquity, with an emphasis on topics related to interior decorations, particularly mosaic floors. She also explores both renowned and anonymous craftsmen of antiquity, various issues of iconography, and the interpretation of ancient written sources. Her main research work involves the writing of successive volumes of the Corpus of Early Christian Mosaic Floors of Greece. Of the five planned volumes, four have been published. She was awarded by the Academy of Athens in December 1988 for the second volume. She has collaborated on European projects focusing on Late Antiquity and the study of mosaic floors, mainly in the Eastern Mediterranean. She has published eight monographs and numerous articles in Greek and international journals, proceedings of international conferences, and collective volumes.
