
Stratis CHaviaras
Stratis Haviaras (June 28, 1935 - March 3, 2020) was born in Nea Kios, Argolida. In 1967, he emigrated to America, where he studied creative writing and translation at Goddard College. He worked in various administrative positions at Harvard's libraries until 1974, when he was appointed as the director of the Woodberry Poetry Room and the Farnsworth Room at the same university. From 1985, he led the fiction writing workshop in Harvard's summer program. He published four poetry collections in Greek and two in English. His novels "When the Tree Sings" and "The Heroic Age," written in English, were released in the English-speaking world and translated into many European languages and in Latin America. In America, Stratis Haviaras founded and directed the poetry magazine "Arion's Dolphin" and the literary magazine "Harvard Review." His articles, translations, and critical evaluations of his own work have been published in numerous American and European publications. He delivered lectures and readings from his books in the United States, Canada, and England. Since 2000, he taught creative writing (novel) at the European Center for the Translation of Literature and Human Sciences (EKEMEL). In 2006, he began collaborating with the National Book Centre of Greece (EKEBI) as an instructor and coordinator in the Art of Speech Workshops. He was an active member of the Association of American Authors and the Society of Greek Writers. He passed away on March 3, 2020, at the age of 85.
