Jules Barbey D' Aurevilly
Jules Barbey d'Aurevilly was born in 1811 in Saint-Sauveur, Normandy, and died in 1889 in Paris. He was an enthusiast of the hedonism of the 18th century, which he praised countless times in his book and his work in general. In his youth, he lived according to these "standards," and as a writer, he passionately sought to delve into the realms of the bizarre, the mysterious, and the satanic. However, this did not prevent him from remaining a... devout Catholic (at the time "An Old Mistress" was published, he was the editor-in-chief of the newspaper Le Monde Catholique). Barbey was also a lover of the monarchical regime and a staunch opponent of the principles of the French Revolution and Napoleon.
