Alexandros-Faidon Lagopoulos

Alexandros-Phaidon Lagopoulos was born in 1939 in Athens. He is an Emeritus Professor of Urban Planning at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and a Corresponding Member of the Academy of Athens. He studied Architecture at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). He holds a postgraduate diploma in Urban Planning and pursued postgraduate studies in Urban Geography in Paris. He is a Doctor of Engineering and a Lecturer in Urban and Regional Planning at NTUA, a Doctor of Social Anthropology from the Sorbonne, and an Honorary Doctor of Semiotics from the New Bulgarian University in Sofia. For many decades, he served as the president of the Hellenic Semiotic Society, of which he is now honorary president, and for four years, he was vice president of the International Association for Semiotic Studies (A.I.S.-I.A.S.S.). He is also the honorary president of the International Association for the Semiotics of Space (A.I.S.E.). His works have been published in Greek, English, French, German, Bulgarian, and Russian. Notable titles include: "Structural Urban Planning: The Settlement as a System" (1973), "The City and the Sign: An Introduction to Urban Semiotics" (edited with Mark Gottdiener, 1986), "Urbanisme et sémiotique dans les sociétés préindustrielles" (1995), "The Sky on Earth" (2002), "Epistemologies of Meaning, Structuralism, and Semiotics" (2004), and "The Symbolism of Space in Ancient Greece" (2012). Many of his semiotic texts have been co-authored with his wife, Karin Boklund-Lagopoulou.
