Edith Wharton

Edith Wharton was born in 1862 into a wealthy New York family. In 1885, she married Edward Robbins Wharton, a banker from Boston. They settled in France in 1907, but their marriage did not go well, and they divorced in 1913, partly due to Edward's psychological issues and partly due to Edith's struggle to balance her duties as a wife with her ambitions as a writer. After her divorce, Edith continued to live in France, where she remained until her death. Her literary salon was frequented by writers such as her compatriot Henry James, with whom she was close friends, Walter Berry, and many others. Among her works are "The Age of Innocence," "The House of Mirth," "Madame de Treymes," "Ghosts and Other Tales," "The Reef," and more. She was working on her last novel, "The Buccaneers," when she passed away on August 11, 1937.
