Israel Zangwill

English author and humorist (1864-1926), son of Jewish immigrants from Tsarist Russia. His most well-known works include the novel "Children of the Ghetto: A Study of a Peculiar People," 1892, mystery stories such as "The Big Bow Mystery," satirical novels like "The King of Schnorrers," 1894, essay collections such as "Dreamers of the Ghetto," 1898 (featuring essays on figures like M. Spinoza, H. Heine, F. Lassalle, among others), and the play "The Melting Pot," which was successful in America between 1908-1909.
