Willa Cather

Willa (Sibert) Cather (1873-1947) was born in Virginia, lived in Nebraska, graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1895, and initially pursued careers in journalism and teaching. Later, she dedicated herself entirely to writing. She published her first poetry collection, "April Twilights," in 1903, followed by the short story collection "The Troll Garden" in 1905, before turning to novels. Her first novel, "Alexander's Bridge," tells the story of an engineer torn between his love for his wife and a youthful romance. With "O Pioneers!" (1913), she returns to the Nebraska prairies to depict the heroic figures of frontier people, while the remarkable "My Antonia" (1918) narrates the life of a Bohemian girl and the pioneering spirit that supports her through hardships. This theme continues in her later novels "One of Ours" (1922) and "A Lost Lady" (1923). Her interest in Catholicism is evident in "Death Comes for the Archbishop" (1927) and "Shadows on the Rock" (1931), a novel set in 18th-century Quebec. Besides "My Mortal Enemy" (1926), her notable novellas include "Lucy Gayheart" (1935) and "Sapphira and the Slave Girl" (1940). She also wrote numerous short stories compiled in collections such as "Youth and the Bright Medusa," "Obscure Destinies," and "The Old Beauty and Others." Cather's dedication to the innocent and courageous world of pioneers often manifests as disdain for the modern world. A representative of aristocracy in an egalitarian society, a writer of rural life during the industrial revolution, and an advocate of spirit in the heart of materialistic culture, Cather is a unique and highly interesting figure in American literature.
