Giorgos CHouliaras

George Chouliaras was born in 1951 in Thessaloniki. He studied at Reed College in Oregon and the Graduate Faculty at the New School for Social Research in New York. He lived for over twenty years in Oregon and New York, working as an academic, cultural advisor (including at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the European Capital of Culture), correspondent, and press attaché, before moving to Ottawa as the Press Counselor of the Greek Embassy. In Canada, he was named the first Honorary Member of the Board of the Ottawa International Writers Festival. Upon returning to Greece in 2003, he was elected to the board of the Hellenic Authors’ Society, where he serves as Vice President for international relations. He co-founded the magazines "Tram" and "Chartis" and was an editor for the "Journal of the Hellenic Diaspora" and other literary and academic journals. He was the third author from Greece, after Odysseas Elytis and Giorgos Savvidis, to participate in the Neustadt International Prize for Literature Jury. He has published six poetry books ("Iconomachy," Tram, Thessaloniki, 1972; "The Other Language," Ypsilon, 1981; "The Treasure of the Balkans," Ypsilon, 1992; "Fast Food Classics," Ypsilon, 1992; "Letter," Ypsilon, 1995; "Roads of Ink," collected edition, Nefeli, 2005), a book of poetic prose, memoirs, and reflections ("Dictionary of Memories," Melani, 2013), and numerous essays and articles in Greek and English on literature, cultural history, and international relations. Reviews and translations of his poems have been published in leading English-language literary journals ("Agenda," "Grand Street," "Poetry," "World Literature Today," etc.). In 2014, he was awarded the Kostas and Eleni Ouranis Prize by the Academy of Athens for his body of work. (Source: Hellenic Authors’ Society)
