Nikos Daskalothanasis

Nikos Daskalothanasis was born in Athens in 1961. He is a professor of modern and contemporary art history at the Department of Theory and History of Art at the Athens School of Fine Arts. He studied archaeology in Athens (National and Kapodistrian University) and art history in Brussels (Université Libre de Bruxelles), Paris (Université de Paris I, Pantheon-Sorbonne), and New York (The Graduate School and University Center of The City University of New York). He holds a Ph.D. in Art History from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Since 1994, he has served as the deputy editor of "The Art Magazine". Among his publications are a monograph on Giorgio de Chirico ("The Painting of Giorgio de Chirico: The Articulation of Metaphysical Space", Opera/Critica editions, 2001), an essay on Clement Greenberg's theory ("Ariadne", vol. 9, 2003), and a study on the historical role of the artist ("The Artist as a Historical Subject: From the 19th to the 21st Century", Agra editions, 2004). He was also one of the authors of the catalog for the contemporary art exhibition "Outlook" (Athens, ASFA-Technopolis-Benaki Museum, 2003). Additionally, he edited the Greek edition of the proceedings of the Brancusi trial against the U.S. government ("Brancusi vs. USA", Athens, Ypsilon editions, 2004), the catalog for the ASFA exhibition "Conversation? Latest Acquisitions of the Van Abbe Museum" (Athens, Agra editions and Bernier/Eliades Gallery, 2002), as well as the exhibitions and catalogs "Giorgos Chatzimichalis. Works 1985-2000" (Athens, National Museum of Contemporary Art, 2001) and "Teaching Art. The History of the Athens School of Fine Arts through the Works of its Teachers" (Athens, ASFA, 2004).
