Platon Tinios

Platon Tinios is an economist and an assistant professor in the Department of Statistics and Insurance Science at the University of Piraeus. He studied economics at Cambridge (M.A. 1978, Ph.D. 1984) and Oxford (M. Phil. 1980). He has taught at the University of Oxford. He has worked in the Ministries of Economy and Industry, as well as at the Commercial Bank. From 1996 to 2004, he served as a special advisor to the Prime Minister. Between 1999 and 2004, he was a member of the European Union's Social Protection Committee. He has published studies in the fields of pensions and social protection. He teaches social insurance, the economics of insurance, and population aging and economy. His research interests are related to pensions, social policy, housing, and the economic impacts of population aging. He has been involved with SHARE from the outset as the deputy coordinator of the Greek team. His research focuses on areas of poverty, informal networks of cohesion and housing, as well as the connections of these issues with health topics.
