Grigorios Xenopoulos

Grigorios Xenopoulos

Grigorios Xenopoulos

He was born in Constantinople in 1867 to a father from Zakynthos and a mother from Phanar. His family left the city when Grigorios was eleven months old and settled in Zakynthos. Thus, he first experienced the world on this enchanting island of the Ionian Sea. The picturesque nature of the place, its unique beauty, the people of Zakynthos with their customs and traditions, the history, and the Ionian culture in general, deeply shaped and influenced his soul. He became intertwined with the Zakynthians and interpreted everything with the temperament he carried from his island. After high school, Xenopoulos attended courses in physics and mathematics at the University of Athens. However, literature and journalism ultimately captivated him. He collaborated with almost all the newspapers and magazines of his time. In 1890, Georgios Drosinis offered him the position of editor-in-chief at Estia. In 1896, Nikolaos Papadopoulos, the owner of the children's magazine "Diaplasis ton Paidon," appointed him as editor-in-chief and later entrusted him with the magazine's direction. At "Diaplasis ton Paidon," his love for Greek children led him to write thousands of "Athenian letters," discussing various topics. Grigorios Xenopoulos became a teacher and systematically cared for the child-reader, the child in need of guidance and education. He possessed an innate pedagogical inclination, composed of his sympathy and interest in children, and his thirst and belief in their education. His contribution to the triad of home-family-child began immediately after he took over the magazine's direction. For about five decades, he offered a remarkable pedagogical and educational work. He helped the child-reader discover the object of knowledge on their own and embrace nature, values, and their fellow humans. He wielded an immensely significant power, the formative one. This contribution was not directed by any specific and organized educational program but primarily by his instinct and love for children. Consciously, however, "Phaedon" worked towards creating a children's literary language—a living language that would touch the tender souls of children, enabling them to learn without books and teachers. He achieved a warm connection with the reader and a liberating and positive stance that educates without enslaving. "My Little Sister" is the first children's novel he wrote in the vernacular language. Although influenced by European cultural upheavals, he did not confine himself to the framework of the ethnographic novel but advanced to explore the description of the psychological capacities of his characters. He became a psychologist who strictly maintained his objectivity. Only when describing landscapes of Zakynthos, and memories of his childhood began to emerge, did he express subjective emotions. The realism of 1900 was what many sought and what could bridge the gap between the masses and the new, still undeveloped Greek prose. With the secrets of the realistic school, his narration flowed more comfortably. Xenopoulos, of course, had an innate narrative ease, aesthetic sense, and a vivid, simple, flowing language that appealed to everyone. He was never dull or tiresome. He was a wordsmith - a tireless creator of language, whether he was writing for a newspaper, magazine, theater, novel, short story, children's book, essay, or poetry. His works are rich, with natural dialogues, sharp observation, and impeccable technique. The setting of Xenopoulos's novels alternates between Athens and Zakynthos. The author aims to depict the Greek society of his time. However, this is not a strict rule, as many of his works bring to life older societies, primarily of Zakynthos. During times of prosperity, power, grandeur, wealth, and culture, he sought and found abundant material, which he skillfully utilized. A marvelous and perhaps his most original work is "The Ghost," an unheard-of true story that took place in the 18th century in Venetian-ruled Zakynthos. "The Red Rock" (1905) offers a successful depiction of life in Zakynthos. It tells the story of a catalytic love experienced by the heroine without any pretense. Three of his best works also have Zakynthian themes ("Laura" 1915, "Emerging" 1923, "Teresa Varma Dakosia" 1925). However, the works that critics have undoubtedly recognized as the best among Xenopoulos's many novels are "The Rich and the Poor" (1919) and "The Honest and the Dishonest" (1921). These belong to a "social trilogy" where the author explores social issues with great success. In addition to his novels, his theatrical work is also significant. Influenced by Ibsen, in 1904 he produced perhaps his most structured theatrical piece, "The Secret of Countess Valeraina," centered around a noble character and her secret concerning a powder - a white powder that cures cataracts. Many of his plays endure to this day, not out of nostalgia, but due to the vivid characters he created. His works such as "Temptation," "Fioro of the Levant," "Stella Violanti," "The Secret of Countess Valeraina," "Fotini Santi," "Emerging," "Popolaros," and others are performed in theaters and adapted for cinema, radio, and television. Xenopoulos passed away at an advanced age in 1951 in Athens, far from his beloved island.
