Chrysanthi Mavropoulou-Tsioumi was born in 1939. She studied history and archaeology at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Thessaloniki and art history in Heidelberg. She received her Ph.D. in 1973 from the University of Thessaloniki. Her tenure at the Archaeological Service began in 1965 and was interrupted for five years from 1969 to 1975, during which she worked as a researcher at the Patriarchal Institute for Patristic Studies and spent two years in Germany as a fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. In 1975, she returned to the Archaeological Service, and in 1981, when the restoration of Thessaloniki's monuments was exclusively assigned to the Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities after the 1978 earthquakes, she took over the direction of the Ephorate and continued the restoration work. From 1986 to 2006, she was a professor of aesthetic education in the Department of Early Childhood Education and Care at the University of Thessaloniki. Since 2007, she has been an emeritus professor at the same university. Her scientific work has covered almost all types of Byzantine art, with a particular focus on Byzantine painting.
