Henri Charrière

Henri Charrière was born in 1906 in Ardèche, France. In 1931, he was sentenced to life imprisonment for a crime he did not commit and was transferred to a penal colony in the Caribbean. After thirteen years and nine daring escape attempts, he finally managed to reach Venezuela, where he settled as a legal and law-abiding citizen. He died in 1973 in Spain, at the age of sixty-six, just one week before the release of Franklin Schaffner's film, starring Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman, which was based on his book. Henri Charrière's story is one of the most thrilling adventures of all time, and the immediacy of the first-person narrative led many critics to describe it as an exceptional and rare example of oral literature. Since its first publication, Henri Charrière's autobiographical account has captivated readers worldwide with its simplicity, originality, and the vivid action that permeates almost every page.
