Peter Carey

Peter Carey was born in Victoria, Australia, in 1943. He studied science but did not complete a degree. He worked for years in advertising agencies. He made his literary debut in 1974 with the short story collection "The Fat Man in History" (published in Greek by Gnosis). This was followed by more short story collections and novels: "Bliss" (1981), "Illywhacker" (1985; shortlisted for the Booker Prize), "Oscar and Lucinda" (1988; awarded the Booker Prize; published in Greek by Aquarius), "The Tax Inspector" (1991), "The Unusual Life of Tristan Smith" (1994), "Jack Maggs" (1997), and "True History of the Kelly Gang" (2001; also awarded the Booker Prize). In 1994, his book "Collected Stories" was published, which includes almost all of his short stories. The book "Parrot and Olivier in America" was shortlisted for both the Commonwealth Prize and the Booker Prize in 2010. Carey has been repeatedly honored for his body of work and is a member of the Royal Society of Literature, the Australian Academy of the Humanities, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He lives in New York City and teaches creative writing at New York University.
