Eknath Easwaran
Sri Eknath Easwaran described himself as a "modern teacher of ancient truths." To introduce the ancient art of meditation to the West, he founded the Blue Mountain Meditation Center in Berkeley, California, in 1961. He dedicated his entire life to teaching meditation, aiming for individual transformation and societal upliftment. Born in 1911 in the state of Kerala, southern India, he grew up in the atmosphere of "Gandhi's India," whom he knew personally. He studied at Nagpur University in central India and became a professor of English literature. In 1959, he went to the United States on a Fulbright scholarship, where he later established his Center. A prolific author, he taught and initiated thousands of individuals into meditation. He passed away in October 1999.
