Alexandre Kojeve

Of Russian origin (his real name was Alexander Kosevnikov), he was born in Moscow in 1902 and died in Paris in 1968. He completed his philosophical studies under K. Jaspers in Heidelberg with a dissertation on Solovyov (1931) and from 1933 taught in Paris (Collège de France). His lectures on Hegel significantly influenced later thinkers towards existential philosophy (Introduction à la lecture de Hegel, 1947). After the war, he withdrew from the philosophical scene and worked at the OECD.
