Aris Mperlis

Aris Berlís (1944-2018) was born in Patras. He was an essayist, critic, and literary translator. Berlís studied Medicine at the University of Athens but did not complete his studies. He translated works by Allen Ginsberg, Virginia Woolf, James Joyce, Emily Brontë, Edgar Allan Poe, Joseph Conrad, Ciaran Carson, Flann O'Brien, among others, into Greek. He contributed to newspapers and magazines on literary criticism. Berlís served as the editor of the magazine "Speira" (1974-1980) and was also a book publisher (publishing house "Krystallo," 1980-1993). Additionally, he taught literary translation at EKEMEL, where he was the director of studies for the English-speaking department. He was a founding member of the Society of Authors and served as its vice president from 2001 to 2003. Berlís passed away in Athens on January 28, 2018, at the age of 74, after a battle with cancer.
