Born in 1971, Kane grew up in Kelvedon Hatch near Brentwood, Essex. After school, she chose to study theater at the University of Bristol, graduating with honors in 1992. She pursued postgraduate studies in playwriting at the University of Birmingham under the supervision of David Edgar. Her first play, "Blasted," premiered in 1995 at the small Royal Court Upstairs theater, causing a scandal among audiences and critics. This was followed by her works "Phaedra's Love" in 1996, "Cleansed" in 1998, "Crave" in 1998, and "4.48 Psychosis" in 1998. Suffering from depression, she took her own life in February 1999.
