Ioannis Maglis

Giannis Magklis was born in Kalymnos, Dodecanese, when the island was part of the Ottoman Empire. He attended and completed his basic education on the island during the Italian rule. He worked in a sponge business and then went to the College of Le Havre. He continued working in the same sponge trading company for twenty-three years. He traveled extensively in Europe and a little in Africa. He served as the manager of the company's store in Paris for six years. He volunteered for the Dodecanese Regiment in Albania. He is the only Greek literary figure who highlighted the life of Greek sponge divers.
