Aris Fioretos

The Swedish author of Greek-Austrian descent, Aris Fioretos, was born in Gothenburg in 1960 to a Greek father and an Austrian mother. He resides between Stockholm and Berlin. At home, he first learned German and then Greek. He studied Literary History at Yale University in the USA and Stockholm University. He has worked as a translator, text editor, and columnist for various Swedish magazines. He made his debut as an author in 1991 with the prose poems "Delandets bok" and the essays "Det kritiska ögonblicket: Hölderlin, Benjamin, Celan." This was followed by the essays "Den grå boken" (1994), "En bok om fantomer" (1996), and a collection of novellas titled "Vanitasrutinerna" (1998). His novels available in Greek include "Stockholm Noir," "The Truth about Sasha Knish," "The Last Greek," and "Mary." He was one of the 13 authors who co-wrote "Global Novel" (2003). In 2010, he edited the first complete and annotated edition of Nelly Sachs' works and published her illustrated biography ("Flucht und Verwandlung"). For his work, he has received numerous accolades, including the Jeanette-Schocken Prize in 2017 in Germany and the Swedish Academy Essay Prize in 2018. Since 2011, he has been the vice president of the German Academy.
