Antonios E. Kaldellis

Antony Kaldellis is a professor of Byzantine culture in the Department of Classics at The Ohio State University (USA). He was born in Athens and studied at the University of Michigan, where he earned his doctorate in 2001. He has published numerous books and articles on various topics related to Byzantine literature, culture, and history, with a focus on historiography and the reception of classical tradition in Byzantium. He has also translated many texts by Byzantine authors into English. His work approaches Byzantium as a fascinating crucible where Greek, Roman, and Christian elements combined in new, innovative, and often contradictory ways. He enjoys uncovering the "hidden history" of Byzantium: its thriving secular traditions, the Christian history of its pagan monuments, and the "secular" concerns and pursuits of its Christian intellectuals.
