Yann Martel

Yann Martel was born in Spain in 1963 to Canadian parents and spent his childhood in various places: Alaska, Costa Rica, France, Ontario, and Mexico. Later, he traveled to Iran, Turkey, and India. He studied philosophy at Trent University and began writing while working various jobs - gardener, dishwasher, and security guard. He received his first literary award for his debut work, a collection of short stories titled "The Facts Behind the Helsinki Roccamatios." Subsequently, Martel published his first novel, titled "Self." Today, he lives in Montreal and is involved in yoga, writing, and volunteer work. Martel was honored with the Hugh MacLennan Prize in 2001 and was a nominee for the 2001 Governor General's Literary Award and the 2001 Commonwealth Writers' Prize for Best Book. His literary career reached its peak with the Booker Prize in 2002.
