Fernand Braudel

French historian and academic (1902-1985), the most renowned representative of the so-called "Annales School," named after the journal "Les Annales," which he directed from 1948 to 1964. His major works include: "The Mediterranean and the Mediterranean World in the Age of Philip II" (1949, 2nd ed. 1966, revised 3rd ed. 1979), "A History of Civilizations" (1963), "Civilization and Capitalism, 15th-18th Century" (1969-79) — all of which have been translated and are available in Greek — as well as the eight-volume "Economic and Social History of France" ("Histoire économique et sociale de la France"), in collaboration with E. Labrousse (1977-1982).
