Mitsos Papanikolaou

Mitsos Papanikolaou (1900-1943), alongside his original poetic and translation work, which was compiled and published by Tasos Korfi, was also involved in literary criticism. His essays and articles were published in "Nea Estia," where he maintained the book review column for several years, as well as in "Neoellinika Grammata," "Bouquet," and other short-lived magazines of the 1920-1940 period. Mitsos Papanikolaou's critical work, primarily focused on poetry, can be divided into critical presentations of poets (mainly French) whom he studied and translated, his few essays on Modern Greek poets, his book reviews, and several articles on contemporary intellectual topics. His work, though small in volume, is of high quality, filled with accurate aesthetic positions, sharp observations, and objective evaluations. It should not be forgotten that Mitsos Papanikolaou was among the first to write, with penetrating insights that were later validated by time, about the emergence of Elytis, the significance of Seferis's and Sarantaris's work, and the works of other contemporaries and predecessors.
