David Lodge

David Lodge was born in London in 1935. He served as an honorary professor in the Chair of Modern English Literature at the University of Birmingham, where he taught for nearly three decades (1960-1987), and is a member of the Royal Society of Literature and a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters. He has written novels and novellas that have been translated into twenty-five languages. Among them are "The Picturegoers" (1960), "Ginger You're Barmy" (1962), "The British Museum is Falling Down" (1965), "Out of the Shelter" (1970), "Changing Places" (1975, Hawthornden Prize and Yorkshire Post Best Novel Award), "How Far Can You Go?" (1980, Whitbread Book of the Year Award), "Small World" (1984) and "Nice Work" (1998), both of which were shortlisted for the Booker Prize and successfully adapted for television, "Paradise News" (1991), "Therapy" (1995), which was shortlisted for the Commonwealth Writers' Prize in 1996, "Home Truths" (1999), "Thinks..." (2001), "Author, Author" (2004), "Deaf Sentence" (2008), "A Man of Parts (H. G. Wells)" (2011). His extensive work as a literary theorist includes "The Novelist at the Crossroads" (1971), "The Modes of Modern Writing" (1977), "Working with Structuralism" (1981), "After Bakhtin: Essays on Fiction and Criticism" (1990), "The Art of Fiction" (1992), "The Practice of Writing" (1996), "Consciousness and the Novel: Connected Essays" (2003), "The Year of Henry James" (2006), and he has edited many classic novels and anthologies of criticism. He has also written plays and television scripts that have received numerous accolades. In 1998, he was awarded the title of CBE (Commander of the British Empire) for his services to literature.
