Jon Fosse

Jon Fosse was born in 1959 in Haugesund, Norway, and has lived in Bergen since the mid-1970s. He studied comparative literature and taught at the Academy of Creative Writing in Hordaland. In 1983, he published his first novel, "Red, Black," followed by numerous other novels, poetry collections, essays, and children's books. In 1994, he wrote his first play, "And We'll Never Be Parted," which was staged at the National Theatre in Bergen. Subsequent works include "Someone is Going to Come," "The Child," "The Name," for which he was awarded the Ibsen Award, "Nightsongs," "Dream of Autumn," "A Summer's Day," "Death Variations," "Winter," "So Beautiful," "Girl on the Sofa," and many others. In August 2000, he received the Nordic Theatre Prize, and in December 2003, he was made a Knight of the French Legion of Honor. Fosse's minimalist and hyper-naturalistic style has radically renewed the landscape of Norwegian dramaturgy.
