Vagelis Kechriotis

Vangelis Kechriotis, a historian, was an assistant professor at Boğaziçi University (Istanbul), where he taught Balkan history and the history of non-Muslims in the Ottoman Empire. He earned his doctorate from the Turkish Studies Program of the Faculty of Humanities at Leiden University, where he defended his dissertation in 2005, titled "The Greeks of Izmir at the End of the Empire: a non-Muslim Ottoman Community between Autonomy and Patriotism." He participated in the publication project of four volumes on the discourses of collective identity in Central and Eastern Europe (1770-1945). The first two volumes (Vol. I: "Late Enlightenment" and Vol. II: "National Romanticism") were published in 2006 in Budapest by CEU Press. He had published numerous articles on the history of Izmir and the Greek Orthodox community within the Ottoman Empire. He passed away on August 27, 2015, at the age of 46, after a brief battle with cancer.
