Rafael Chirbes

Rafael Chirbes was born in 1949 in Tavernes de Valldigna, Valencia. He studied Modern History in Madrid and worked as a literary critic, Spanish teacher, and journalist. A multi-award-winning author, Chirbes is considered one of the most important Spanish writers. His books primarily address the issues of the Spanish middle class. His first novel, titled "Mimoun," was published in 1988. His novel "Crematorio" (2007), which received, among other accolades, the Spanish Literary Critics' Award, is regarded as "one of the best novels in Spanish literature of our century so far" (Ángel Basanta, El Mundo).
