Gianis Varoufakis

Yanis Varoufakis was born in Athens in 1961, where he completed his high school education. He then studied Mathematics and Economics at the University of Essex and the University of Birmingham. He has taught at the Universities of Essex, East Anglia, Cambridge, and Glasgow. He served as an Associate Professor of Economics at the University of Sydney in Australia and was a Fellow in Economic and Social Ethics at the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium. He was a Visiting Professor at the University of Texas (Lyndon Johnson Graduate School of Public Affairs, in Austin) and an "Economist-in-residence" at Valve Corporation in Seattle, USA. Since 2000, he has been a Professor of Economic Theory and Political Economy at the Department of Economics at the University of Athens. In 2003, he founded the Doctoral Program of the Department (UADPhilEcon), which he directed until October 2008. He is the Director of the Political Economy Division of the Department of Economics at the University of Athens. His books include titles such as "Rational Conflict" (Blackwell, 1991), "Foundations of Economics" (Routledge, 1998), and "Game Theory." He is married to Danae Stratou and has a daughter, Xenia. He was elected as a Member of Parliament with SYRIZA in the B' Athens constituency in the January 2015 elections, during which he assumed the role of Minister of Finance in the Alexis Tsipras government until July of the same year.
