Galateia Saranti

Galatea Saranti (1920 - 2009). Galatea Saranti was born in Patras. She graduated from the Arsakeio School of Patras. Later, she moved with her family to Athens. She enrolled in the Law School of the University of Athens, but did not graduate, as she decided from a young age to dedicate herself to writing. She made her literary debut in 1945 with the publication of the short story "The Castle" in the magazine Nea Estia. This was followed by more short stories and the novella "The Book of Johannes and Maria," which was enthusiastically received by Grigorios Xenopoulos. In 1947, her novella "The Book of Joy" was published along with the short story "Mines." Saranti's work is primarily prose, but she also engaged in literary translation. She was honored with the Prize of the Group of 12 (for "The Return"), the State Novel Prize (for "Our Old House"), the State Short Story Prize (for "Remember Vilna"), the Ouranis Foundation Prize of the Academy of Athens (for "Cracks"), and the I.D. Kollaros Children's Novel Prize (for "Dawn of Freedom"). Her works have been translated into English, German, Italian, Russian, Swedish, Hungarian, Romanian, Polish, and Spanish. Galatea Saranti's literary work is characterized by a solid structure and limited external action, with an emphasis on character psychology and an anxious search for the meaning of human fate. Through her finely crafted writing and the indirect expression of her theoretical and ideological concerns, Saranti focuses mainly on the emotional world of her characters, as shaped and expressed within their respective social environments. In 1997, she was inducted as a member of the Academy of Athens, becoming the first Greek female academic. She passed away at the age of 89 on December 28, 2009.
