Lampros Liavas

Lambros Liavas is an Associate Professor of Ethnomusicology at the Department of Music Studies at the University of Athens. He studied Law in Athens, Southeast European Ethnology and Ethnomusicology at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris, piano and advanced theory at the Hellenic Conservatory with Yiannis Ioannidis, and Byzantine and folk music with Simon Karas. He is the president of the Museum of Greek Folk Musical Instruments F. Anogeianakis - Center of Ethnomusicology. He has conducted field research and music recordings throughout Greece and in the Greek-speaking villages of Southern Italy. He has curated bibliographic and discographic publications, documentary films, exhibitions, conferences, festivals, and traditional music concerts in Greece and abroad. He has been involved in organizing archives, music criticism, and producing radio and television programs about Greek music. In theater, he has worked on research, text writing, music, and directorial supervision in performances of ancient drama, musical theater, and contemporary dance. His scientific interests include Greek folk music (with an emphasis on regional dialects and folk musical instruments), urban folk music (rebetiko, shadow theater), and modern Greek song. Since 1992, he has been teaching the following courses at the Department of Music Studies: "Introduction to Greek Folk Music," "Urban Folk Music," and "Greek Folk Musical Instruments," as well as seminars such as "Methodology of Field Ethnomusicological Research," "Music in Shadow Theater," and "Historical Overview of Modern Greek Song." He also teaches in the Interdepartmental Postgraduate Program in Music Culture and Communication, focusing on the course "Music and Cultural Management."
