Georgios I. Kasimatis

Georgios I. Kasimatis
George Kasimatis was born in 1932 on the island of Kythera to farmer parents. He studied law at the University of Athens and pursued postgraduate studies at the Universities of Bern and Munich, where he earned his Ph.D. in constitutional law, focusing specifically on governmental functions. From 1973 to 1999, he served as a university professor at the Law School of the University of Athens, where he taught constitutional law and political science. He is now an emeritus professor at the same university. Between 1985 and 1990, he was the first president of the Ionian University, overseeing its organization and establishment. He also served as the president of the Law Department from 1993 to 1997, founded and directed the Institute of Constitutional Research, and was a founding member and board member of the Association of Greek Constitutionalists. Additionally, he was a founding member, vice president, and honorary president of the International Association of Constitutional Law, and has been an emeritus professor since 1999. Dedicated to his role as a university educator and without engaging in active politics, George Kasimatis has played a significant role in the public life of Greece, always grounded in his expertise and experience in his field. In this capacity, he served as a legal advisor to the Prime Minister (1981-1987), president of the National Council for Radio and Television (1997-1998), a member of the Committee for the Repatriation of Political Refugees, vice president of the Expert Committee under the Prime Minister (2005-2006), president of the Committee for Transparency in Public Administration under the Leader of the Opposition (2005-2006), and since 2003, vice president and board member of the "Foundation of the Hellenic Parliament for Parliamentarism and Democracy." He was a member of the International Group of Eight Experts that, in 2005, issued the Declaration of Principles of International and European Law for a Sustainable Solution to the Cyprus Issue and participated as an expert in the preparatory work of the Fifth (1975) and Sixth (1986) Revisional Parliament. He has been a member, president, vice president, and member of numerous legislative committees and boards of various political, scientific, and charitable organizations. His written work includes hundreds of scientific studies and publications in the press on the state, democracy, and politics. Today, George Kasimatis, having been the first to study and reveal the violations of the fundamental principles of legality in Greece's loan agreements with Eurozone countries and the IMF, is fighting for the restoration of democracy, the country's independence, and the rights of its people that have been affected.
