Anthony Clifford Grayling
A.C. Grayling was born in 1949 in Zambia and spent his childhood among the British community in East Africa. After returning to England, he studied at the University of Sussex and completed his doctoral thesis at Magdalen College, Oxford, in 1981. His thesis, supervised by philosophers P.F. Strawson and A.J. Ayer, was on the topic: "Skepticism and Transcendental Arguments." He then taught at St Anne's College, Oxford, before being appointed to Birkbeck College, University of London, where he currently holds the position of Professor of Philosophy. His philosophical interests lie in the areas of epistemology, metaphysics, logic, and the critique of philosophical skepticism, as evidenced by his major books: "An Introduction to Philosophical Logic" (1982), "The Refutation of Scepticism" (1985), "Berkeley: The Central Arguments" (1986), "Wittgenstein" (1988), "Russell" (1996), as well as scholarly publications such as "Epistemology and Realism" (1991-2), and "Independence and Transcendence: The Independence Thesis and Realism" (1998). Believing that a philosopher should engage with contemporary issues, he does not hesitate to publicly address topics such as war crimes, drug legislation, euthanasia, and human rights through articles and commentary on radio and television broadcasts, as well as in "Prospect Magazine," which he edits.
