Sofia Kalantzakou

Sophia Kalantzakos is a Global Distinguished Professor of Environmental Studies and Public Policy at New York University (NYU) in New York and Abu Dhabi. During the 2019-2020 academic year, she was a Visiting Scholar in Residence and a Fung Global Fellow at the Princeton Institute of Global and Regional Studies at Princeton University. Her most recent academic publications include "China and the Geopolitics of Rare Earths" (Oxford University Press, 2018), "The EU, US, and China Tackling Climate Change: Policies and Alliances for the Anthropocene" (Routledge, 2017), and as co-editor with N. Farantouris, "Energy and Environmental Transformations in a Globalizing World: An Interdisciplinary Dialogue, Nomiki Vivliothiki", 2015. She founded and directs the environmental research center eARThumanities at NYU Abu Dhabi. Currently, she is completing her new book, which examines how China's rapid rise, its vision for creating modern Silk Roads, shifts in power dynamics, and the terrestrial and maritime reunification of Eurasia with Africa have already begun to reshape international organizations and governance structures while opening new mobility prospects that transcend the boundaries of global free trade. Her interdisciplinary research focuses on issues of environmental governance, energy, applied policy, and geostrategy, with a particular emphasis on climate change and resource competition as threats shaping global power dynamics. Her research also explores the trajectory of China-Europe relations. Sophia Kalantzakos was a Fellow at the international academic center for the environment, the Rachel Carson Center at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitat in Munich in 2015 and again in 2018, and since 2018, she has been a member of the academic board of the Center.
