Alexandre Dumas

Alexandre Dumas (père), a French novelist and playwright, was born in 1802 and died in 1870. He possessed a vivid imagination and great energy. Initially working as a clerk in a notary's office, he passionately studied the history of his homeland and began writing comedies in collaboration with two others. Subsequently, he wrote many romantic dramas and comedies and then turned to historical novels, in which he achieved great success. "The Three Musketeers" and "The Count of Monte Cristo" made him famous worldwide. Dumas had the gift of storytelling and captivated audiences with his writing style. He successfully brought romanticism to the theater and transformed the novel into a popular art form. His productivity was astonishing, having written 257 volumes of novels and 25 volumes of plays, either alone or in collaboration with other "generals," as he called them, of whom he was the "Napoleon." Victor Hugo once said of Dumas: "He is not merely European; he is universal." Alexandre Dumas passed away in 1870. In 2002, his remains were transferred to the Panthéon in Paris, the mausoleum where France's illustrious figures are interred.
