Gisis Papageorgiou

Gisis Papageorgiou was born in Athens in 1939 and is a retired Captain of the Navy. In 1981, he resigned from the Navy and spent approximately 12 years working as a cartoonist, collaborating with the newspaper "I Proti" and later with "To Vima," "Eleftherotypia," "Ta Nea," and various Athenian magazines. His acquaintance with stone lighthouses began in 1980-1981 when he served as the commander of the Lighthouse Base. Gathering data and information on the history of the Greek lighthouse network and designing the stone-supervised lighthouses, he published the initial edition of "The Greek Stone Lighthouses" in 1996. In the same year, he released "Greece! Nice to Meet You!", a humorous take on the history of modern Greece, followed by "Greece! We Lost!" and "Olympics! We Gave...". Concurrently, he completed research and design on the uniforms of the Navy from the era of Kapodistrias to the present day, and in 1998, he published the album "Navy Uniforms." This was followed by the albums "Greek Cartoonists of the 20th Century" in 1999 and "The Great Troupe" in 2000. His work on Greek lighthouses led to the creation of a permanent exhibition at the lighthouse of Gavdos, which was recently restored. Since 2000, he has been exclusively dedicated to researching and designing traditional Greek costumes. His goal is to present the subject as comprehensively and accurately as possible through a total of 15 volumes with up to 1500 designs. The documentation of the material is overseen by the Academy of Athens.
