David Herbert Lawrence

David Herbert Lawrence was born in Eastwood, Nottinghamshire, in 1885. He published his first novel in 1911. Well-traveled, he lived in Italy (Florence), Australia, and Central America, eventually settling in France. His most famous novels include "The White Peacock" (1911), "Sons and Lovers" (1913), "Women in Love" (1921), "The Plumed Serpent" (1926), and "Lady Chatterley's Lover" (1928). The latter caused a scandal and was banned for many years in England and the USA. "The Rainbow" (1915) faced a similar fate. His critique of industrial civilization and the puritanical morals of his time led to conflicts with censorship and the literary establishment, but did not prevent his work from securing a place in world literature. Today, he is considered a classic author, with new interpretations of his writings continually emerging. His highly interesting correspondence was published in 1932, edited by Aldous Huxley. He died in Provence in 1930.
