Takis Karvelis

Takis Karvelis (1925-2017) was born in Aetoliko, Mesolongi. He studied at the Marasleio Teaching School and the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Athens. He worked in secondary education from 1953 to 1984 as a philologist, general inspector, and school advisor. He was a founding member of the Society of Writers, where he served as General Secretary for several years (1986-1992). He co-published the Ioannina-based magazine "Dokimasia" and was a member of the editorial board of "Texts of Modern Greek Literature" for high schools. He published poetry collections including "Signals" (1956), "Testimony" (1966), "Metaphase" (1972), "Illegal Writing" (1977), "The Memory Crescent" (1983), "It's Not Last Year's Weather" (1988), "Change of Scene" (1991), "The Poems of Little Rezeda" (1995), "Into the Abyss of Oblivion" (2002), "Testimony 1956-2002" (2004), and "Of the Unseen" (2011). He also authored studies such as "Modern Poetry: Theory and Practice" (1983), "Second Reading" (1984), "Second Reading 2" (1991), "Konstantinos Chatzopoulos, the Pioneer" (1998), "Minos Zotos" (2000), "Second Reading 3" (2001), "The Generation of 1880" (2003), and "Polytropos Harmony: The Polytropos Harmony of Elytis' Poetry According to Kalvos" (2007). He translated treatises by John Chrysostom (1974) and Lucian's dialogue "Lucius or the Ass" (1982). In 1999, he was awarded the State Prize for Essay-Criticism for his book "Konstantinos Chatzopoulos, the Pioneer," and in 2016, he received the Petros Haris Foundation Award from the Academy of Athens for his lifetime work. He passed away on January 18, 2017.
