
Alexander Kitroeff
Alexandros Kitroeff was born in Athens in 1955. After receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Oxford, he taught European and Greek history at Queens College in New York and at the Onassis Center for Hellenic Studies at New York University (NYU). Since 1996, he has been a history professor and the director of the Center for Peace and Globalization at Haverford College in Pennsylvania, USA. Kitroeff specializes in the study of modern Greek consciousness and identity, particularly as expressed in politics and society. He has authored the monographs "The Greeks in Egypt, 1919-1937"; "Ethnicity and Class"; "Griegos en América"; "Wartime Jews: The Case of Athens"; and "Wrestling with the Ancients: Modern Greek Identity and the Olympics" (which links modern Greek history with the development of the international Olympic movement and has received excellent reviews internationally). He also teaches the course "Sports and Society." Additionally, he is a member of the editorial board of the "Journal of the Hellenic Diaspora."
