Kostas E. Tsiropoulos

Kostas E. Tsiropoulos (1930) was born in Larissa, Greece. He studied law in Thessaloniki and art history in Paris and Barcelona. He was the founder and director of the annual publication "Christian Symposium" (1966-1971) and the magazine "Responsibility" (1961-1966, and from 1972 onwards). He collaborated for many years with the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation (ERT) and the newspaper "Kathimerini" (1962-1967). He served as the General Secretary of the House of Fine Arts and Letters (1974-1976), the General Secretary of the National Theatre (1975-1980), and the President of the National Film Center. He was honored with the Fexis Award of the Twelve (1964), the State Essay Award (1966), the First State Novel Award (1979), the Ouranis Award from the Academy of Athens (1986), the Award of the Society of Christian Letters (1989), the First Award of the Society of Literary Translators (1990), and the Grand State Literature Prize (2007). He was also named an honorary doctor of the University of Granada (2004). His poetic, prose, and essay work spans dozens of volumes. He also translated books and texts from Spanish, Catalan, and French by authors such as Ortega y Gasset, Antonio Machado, Federico García Lorca, Camilo José Cela, Juan Ramón Jiménez, Salvador Espriu, José Bergamín, Druon, Genevoix, and Aranguren, among others. His books and writings have been translated into the major European languages. He passed away on February 23, 2017.
