Vasileios Markezinis

Sir Vassilios Markezinis was born in Athens on July 10, 1944, into a family that, on his father's side, has been associated with the worlds of literature and politics for over ten generations, initially in Venice and later in Greece. He has taught at the universities of Cambridge, Oxford, London, Leiden (Netherlands), as well as at the Law School of the University of Texas (Austin) as a permanent, full Professor. For several years, he also held professorial positions at the universities of Paris (Sorbonne, France), Munich (Germany), Siena and Rome (Italy), and at the Law School of Cornell University. His forty-eight books and more than one hundred and fifty articles cover legal topics, the movement of ideas, psychobiography, the classics, and the fine arts. Thanks to his work, he has been honored as a fellow—referred to as a member in Greek—by the Academies of Athens, Belgium, Great Britain, France, the Netherlands, and Rome (Lincei), as well as by the Archaeological Society of Athens and the American Law Institute. In 2005, he was knighted by HM Queen Elizabeth II for his "outstanding services to International Relations." He has also been awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of France and Italy, and he has received the insignia of the Grand Officer of the Order of Merit of Germany and the Officer of the Legion of Honor of France.
