Andreas Andrianopoulos
Andreas Andrianopoulos was born in 1946 in Piraeus. He studied Political Science in Athens and Comparative Politics, Development, and International Relations at the Universities of Kent and Cambridge in England and Oslo in Norway. He holds a diploma from the special Leadership and Administration program at the Kennedy School of Harvard University and has received two honorary doctorates. He was elected a total of seven times as a Member of Parliament for Piraeus and Islands and served as Minister and Deputy Minister in six governments of the New Democracy party, while in 1986, he was also elected Mayor of Piraeus. Among other positions, he served as Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Culture and Sciences, and Minister of Industry, Energy, Technology, and Commerce. On November 17, 1994, he resigned from his parliamentary position, simultaneously withdrawing from active politics. In the national elections of March 2004, he was elected for the 8th time to the Greek Parliament (State Deputies), collaborating with PASOK. His writings are published in Greek newspapers and magazines, and his analyses have appeared in internationally renowned publications such as the "Wall Street Journal," "Financial Times," "Transition," "Links," among others, and he has authored books published in Greece and abroad. He has also presented informational programs on television. He was a Visiting Scholar at St. Edmund's College, University of Cambridge (1995-6), and collaborated with the Inner Asia and Mongolia Unit of the School of Oriental Studies at the same university. He is a Public Policy Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington (1998-9), particularly at the Kennan Institute for the countries of the former Soviet Union. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Woodrow Wilson Center Alumni Association in Europe. He has directed seminars and given lectures on issues of Islamic revival and oil pipelines at Harvard, Stanford, Berkeley, Wisconsin, George Washington, Virginia, and Columbia Universities, at the U.S. Department of State, and at research centers in Washington. He has traveled extensively in Central and South Asian countries and works as a political risk analysis consultant for international companies operating in the energy sector in these regions. In November 2003, he was appointed Professor of Public Policy "Eleftherios Venizelos" at the American College of Greece. His recent books include: "Democratic Capitalism and the Knowledge Society" (1997), "In the Heart of Islam: From the Steppes of Central Asia to Afghanistan" (1998), "Globalization and Its Enemies" (2002), "In the Heart of Islam" (2002), "Bloodbath in the South" (2003), and with Shireen Hunter (ed.) "Geostrategic Developments in Eurasia After September 11" (Frank Cass, 2003). Also, "Crisis in Trans-Atlantic Relations," with other experts, from the ZEI foundation in Bonn, 2005. He also wrote "Defending Freedom" (2005), "Total War for Energy" (2006), and "Caterina Sforza" (2006). Recently, he worked as the head of a team of international experts advising the government of the Russian Federation on competition and market liberalization issues. He was also named for the second time as a fellow at the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington, focusing on the Energy Diplomacy of the Russian Federation. He is currently the Director of the Institute of Diplomacy and Global Affairs at the American College of Greece (Deree College), located in Plaka, and is the coordinator of the college's graduate program in Leadership. Additionally, he teaches Effective Communication Campaigns and Risk Analysis at the University of Kaliningrad (formerly Koningsberg) in the Russian Federation. Andreas Andrianopoulos has two sons and lives in Hydra and Athens.
