Eleni Bastéa was born and raised in Thessaloniki and pursued her university studies in the United States. She studied Art History at Bryn Mawr College and Architecture at the University of California, Berkeley, where she earned a Master of Architecture (1982) and a Ph.D. in Architectural History (1989). Her doctoral dissertation focused on the Urban Planning and Architecture of Athens during the reign of Otto. Her first book, "The Creation of Modern Athens: Planning the Myth" (2000), was published by Cambridge University Press and was awarded the European Prize for Modern Greek Studies "John D. Criticos Prize." The Greek edition is translated by the author from English. She has presented her work at international conferences and universities in the USA and Europe and has published articles in numerous academic books and journals. She is a member of the executive committee of the Modern Greek Studies Association and edits the architectural publications for the British art magazine Cent. [http://www.centmagazine.co.uk].
